Hollywood Urban Park news update

June 23rd, 2010

On  June 10, a group of 17 participants walked seven potential sites for a Hollywood Urban park, armed with maps and site rating sheets in hand. Led by Hollywood architect John Perkins.

This was the 2nd in the series of 4 Hollywood Urban Park Community Events. Organized by the Hollywood Neighborhood Association in collaboration with the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, and the Hollywood Boosters.

Community members, Hollywood Neighborhood Association, and City Staff walk the neighborhood, June 10,2010

Hollywood Urban Park Meeting – May 20

May 18th, 2010

Friendly Reminder: THIS THURSDAY, MAY 20 is the first in a series of 4 Hollywood Urban Park Community Events at 7 pm at the Hollywood Senior Center,  located at 1820 NE 40th Avenue

Organized by your Hollywood Neighborhood Association

The speaker is George Crandall, of Crandall Arambula. He works on Urban Planning and Revitalization projects, in the Portland area, and across the country. His specialty is the topic of the night : What makes places great.

If you are interested, their website is: http://www.ca-city.com.

There has been talk of a park in Hollywood for a while and many people we have found support the idea. We look forward to seeing all of you this Thursday, and hope you will attend the other three as well, which will progressively be geared towards concrete ( no pun intended here !), recommendations.

My personal goal as a Hollywood resident and HNA board member is basically two-fold:

I’m envisioning a vibrant community gathering space  in the heart of Hollywood that also adds much needed green space.  The best analogy I can think of is this:  A neighborhood without a community gathering space is like a house without a living room. And nobody wants that. We have a need and desire to connect, convene, commune and play. This “neighborhood living room” can take on many forms and uses and we hope you will be inspired to come and listen and participate in the process.

And oh yes, did I mention the free beer ………..?

Here is a description again of our HUP event series:

Walk & Roll for NE Sunday Parkways
Willamette Pedestrian Coalition & PSU’s Institute on Aging Team Up for a Walk and Talk about Aging and Cities

Sunday Parkways is back and coming to Northeast Portland May 16th!  This Sunday, Alan DeLaTorre from PSU’s Institute on Aging joins WPC to lead a walk that focuses on aging, physical limitations and the built environment.

Walk and Roll: Mobile Discussion on Aging and Our Cities
with Alan DeLaTorre, PSU’s Institute on Aging
Start time: 10:30AM
Start location: Fernhill Park, WPC table

(near the climbing wall)
Length of walk: 45 mins, less than one mile

The Sunday Parkways “Walk and Roll” in Northeast Portland on Sunday, May 16th will be an educational walk intended to teach about aspects of the built environment that are positive and negative for older adults and persons with disabilities.  Issues such as sidewalks, traffic patterns, Portland policy, and housing design will be discussed.  Since this is the first time such as walk will be offered, it will be a learning experience for all of those involved, including the leader of the walk.  Everyone is welcome to join the group and it will be a great opportunity to meet new people and learn a little about how our environments impact all of us, no matter what your age and/or ability.

The walk will start at 10:30 a.m. at Fernhill Park near the climbing wall at WPC’s table (we’re the people with yellow shirts and a “Wheel of Trivia”) and will last approximately 45 minutes (less than one mile) as the group walks down Ainsworth to Alberta Park.
